Equation for Great Subject Lines
Email Marketing has been a common and effective tool of marketing managers for many years now.
Writing a great subject line is a challenge that copywriters/marketing managers face on a daily basis.
The main “job” of the subject line is to get the email opened!
Obviously, It also should give an indication of the content inside the email.
A misleading subject line could lead to the reader feeling cheated. This would defeat the entire purpose of sending the email.
Some of the other common mistakes on subject line are :
❌ Using spammy words like Free offer / Discounts / offers : These generally lead the emails to land in promotional / spam folders rather than the inbox. This reduces the chances of these emails being opened/read.
❌ Not evoking curiosity : If the subject line is boring / similar to 100s of other emails, the chances that the reader would open the same are very low.
❌ Very long subject lines : The impact is lost if the subject lines are too long. Also, many people view emails on their mobiles nowadays, where the complete subject line may not be visible.
❌ Spelling & Grammatical mistakes : These emails look unprofessional.
❌ Ignoring common courtesy (like using all Caps, or too many emojis, exclamation etc)
Thus in summary, here is my equation for a great subject line!
Curiosity + Relevance = Great Subject Line
